Description

This object is a collapsible metal drinking cup 990.6.19a with an accompanying leather carrying case 990.6.19b. The cup is light grey in color and is comprised of 5 telescoping bands. The top band features a pair of metal tension buckles which, when closed, cause the cup to retain its extended shape. The bottom of the cup features a circular, rimmed, base with a slight slope leading outwards and downwards from the center. A circular attachment piece at the bottom of the cup's interior affixes the collapsing section to the metal base. The leather carrying case is pouched shape with a folding cover. The cover snaps to the body of the case by a metal snap fastener. The exterior leather is varying shades of mottled brown. The exterior leather of the case is smoother than the interior. The interior leather is more uniform in color, a slightly reddish brown, and appears rough in texture.

Context

This cup was donated to Goulbourn Museum by the Switzer family of Stittsville in 1990. This style of “telescoping” or “collapsible” cup was reusable and portable; they were advertised as convenient accessories for cyclists, motorists, and canoeists. A leather carrying case and an engraved trademark on the cup indicate the items were produced by a leather goods manufacturing company C. F. Rumpp & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
