Description

Dark coloured metal Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) lantern. Bottom of the lantern has a tapered wire base which is attached to the base of the metal fount and burner. The exterior of the fount has a series of symmetrical holes through the metal which are organized in a straight line around the circumference of the lantern. The lantern has a clear glass globe which is protected inside a metal cage. The lantern has a slightly tapered top, which attaches to the top of the cage around the globe. To the top is affixed a metal cylinder on which there are three lines of symmetrical holes drilled through the metal around the circumference of the cylinder. On the top of the lantern is embossed the following, "E.T. Wright & Co Mfrs. Hamilton - ONT" and "CPR Pat.. [indistinguishable]."

Context

Lanterns were used as a means of illuminating and giving signals for long-range communications. These early railway lanterns helped operators signal their outgoing or incoming communications at night.
