Description

Ontario vehicle license plate. Embossed with "Ont. 1933 #BL-830" black lettering on yellow background.

Context

The first plates issued by the Province of Ontario were made in 1903 and at that time vehicle registration was the responsibility of a single clerk - there were only 198 registered vehicles in 1903. By 1913, there were over 17,300 motor vehicles registered in Ontario. By the end of the 1920’s the 562,000 vehicles in Ontario made road improvements, highway systems, snow removal, and operating licenses for all drivers necessary.
