Indenture: Jackson Stitt and John Hodgins, E1/2 Lot 23 Concession 12, 1856Entry/Object ID
001.2.32.12a,bDescription
This object is an indenture between Jackson Stitt and John Hodgins regarding a parcel of land designated E1/2 Lot 23 Concession 12. It is dated to January 14, 1856. The support is a grey lined paper; the lines are significantly faded. The medium is a black handwritten ink, rendered in cursive. A metal nail has been punched through the vertical center of 001.2.32.12b with the point facing towards the top of the page to create a spine/hinge.
This object likely assumed the form of a booklet at one point in time. This can be asserted with a high degree of confidence due to location and shape of the tear lines on the proper right edge of 001.2.32.12a which correspond in shape and size to the nail used as a spine in 001.2.32.12b. Furthermore, 001.2.32.12b contains no title page, however the proper right half of the front contains the end of the document, whereas the front of 001.2.32.12a contains the title and first page. This would strongly suggest 001.2.32.12a would have assumed the position of the first page of the booklet when this object was in one piece.
001.2.32.12a contains the title of the document "This Indenture" which appears at the top center of the front in a larger decorative script, rendered in the same black handwritten ink as the text body. This fragment has writing on both sides.
001.2.32.12b is a larger sheet of paper. The front contains body text on both halves. There is a metal nail in the center with the point facing towards the top of the page. The proper right half of the back contains body text. The proper left half of the back contains a body of text not associated with the primary body, as well as signatures. There are three seals located near the center line of the back proper left half. They are in a vertical alignment. The seals assume the form of a square piece of paper adhered to the page with an unknown adhesive; the corners of the squares are oriented towards the top and bottom of the pages. A circular imprint has been created in the center of the paper portion of seals, impressed into the soft adhesive below; these imprints assume the form of circles formed by minute holes.Context
