This object is an indenture between Jackson Stitt and William Alexander. It is dated August 29, 1857. The support is a grey/green sheet of paper which has been torn into five fragments. The medium is a handwritten brown ink rendered in a cursive script. There is a single inscription on 001.2.23.9e in pencil. Individual fragments are described as follows.
001.2.32.9a contains a top corner as well as a portion of the top and a side. The partial phrase "This Indentu" appears at the top of the front in a large, decorative script. This fragment contains writing from the primary body of text on both sides.
001.2.32.9b contains a corner as well as a portion of two edges. There is text on the front; the font is slightly smaller than that of the rest of the document however it is rendered in the same brown ink and handwritten script. The words "County of Carleton Registry Office" appear at the top of this body of text. This text block appears to be an independent body from the primary document. The reverse is blank.
001.2.32.9c contains a bottom corner as well as a portion of two edges. There is text from the primary body of text on both sides. The date "AD 1856" appears at the proper top left of the back, within the body of text.
001.2.32.9d contains a top edge. There is text from the primary body located on the front. The back is blank and affected by flyspecks.
001.2.32.9e contains a section of the title page on the front, with the top and bottom having been torn off. The words "Bargain and Sale between Jackson Stitt and wife and William Alexander. Date 29 August, 1857" appear on the front. An additional inscription appears below rendered in pencil which appears to partially outline a mathematical equation. The back of this fragment contains text which is oriented perpendicular to the text on the front; a "{" symbol is visible at center.Context
This object is highly significant as it pertains to Jackson Stitt who served as a postmaster and founding member of the eponymous community of Stittsville. This is historically significant as it provides information about a prominent family which was instrumental in the settlement of the Goulbourn area.Lexicon
