Content warning: This image relates to the residential school system, which may be distressing to some viewers.
Rev. James P. Rice served as principal of Red Deer Residential / Industrial School from 1903 to 1907. During this period, residential schools operated as part of a government- and church-run system that aimed to assimilate Indigenous children and eradicate Indigenous cultures and languages. These institutions caused profound harm to children, families, and communities and are now recognized as part of the cultural genocide of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
