Context
Spurs are worn on one’s heels to help a rider direct a horse with their feet. They have been used since the early days of horseback riding and come in many different shapes and styles. This pair of spurs is made from brass and uses leather straps to attach them to the back of a pair of boots.
These spurs likely were used by a member of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade which was one of the first Canadian units to arrive in Europe for the First World War. The unit spent very little time in the saddle because of the rough and muddy terrain created by the fighting. The Great War is remembered as the last major conflict where Canadian cavalry played a significant role.
