These annual ledgers itemize the taxable holdings of each taxpayer in the Town, including real estate, buildings, conveyances, livestock, and other taxable household property. In addition, they record whether individuals eligible to vote have paid their annual poll tax. Valuation of Vessels based in the Town (as well as a listing of owners and their respective shares of ownership) is also included in a separate section. Entries are clustered geographically, though location is not identified in the early years.Context
This volume is a compilation of three years, 1868, 1869, 1870, of tax valuations. Each year is contained in a separate section of this volume. Before 1868, the Town Clerk recorded tax valuations, along with vital records and other business of the Town, in consolidated Volumes I, II, and III of the Town's official records.
