An essential part of seamanship training was knot tying, as they would also be serving as part of the crew on their ships. The Army Air Corps personnel were trained to repair aircraft, hence the three week training sessions at the Grand Hotel. Twenty-four Liberty Ships were converted into floating ARU's (Aircraft Repair Units) to facilitate Operation Ivory Soap's mission to make sure B-29's and P-51's were repaired and able to fight Japan in the last year of World War II.
