Name/Title

Operation Ivory Soap - classes at the Grand Hotel were conducted outside under the shade of the live oaks. 1944-1945

Description

The almost new Grand Hotel III was leased to the Government for military training in 1944-1945, long before there was conference meeting space. Classes were conducted in the shade of the oaks or under the pavilion at Julep Point, where seaman training was conducted. Once training was completed, these Army Air Corps aircraft repairmen or machinists boarded modified Liberty Ships for a journey to the Pacific, where they repaired B-29's ad P-51's in the fight against Japan.
