Name/Title

The Gunnison House, built in early 1850's by John A. M. Battle at Point Clear, where it stood until 1985.

Description

Constructed in the early 1850's, the Gunnison House was two doors down from the Point Clear Hotel. A succession of ownership carries the names of several previous Grand Hotel owners; at one time it was owned by Van B. Gunnison, presumably for whom the house was named. It served many purposes, including a summer home, part of the hospital facilities to care for wounded Civil War Confederate soldiers from 1863-65, a ballroom, a party venue, and lastly a dormitory. Marriott Corporation purchased the Grand Hotel in 1981, including this house. It was demolished in 1985 to make room for the new Grand Ballroom, which opened in 1986 by Marriott's Grand Hotel.
