During WWII, Grand Hotel was a Marine Training camp, training Army Air Corps soldiers to become sailors (they became part of the crew on board one of 24 converted Liberty Ships). They utilized DUKW "Duck" Boats for transport of repairmen and supplies from ship to shore.
