Used as a Marine Training School for the Army Air Corps, the Grand Hotel was leased to the Government during 1944-1945 where Operation Ivory Soap began its classified training of over 5,000 troops. Upon completion, each soldier received his seamanship training certificate, followed by assignment to one of twenty-four converted Liberty Ships which shipped out to the Pacific during the latter part of World War II. Operational aircraft were vital to the defeat of the Japanese.Create Date
