Grand Hotel Cannon at Cannon Park / Grand Activities LawnDescription
This replica of a model 1841 6-Pounder (smooth bore) cannon was dedicated on March 15, 2008...hence a new tradition began. Crafted by the Steen Cannon & Ordnance Works, Ashland, KY for the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL. A daily tribute to the Grand Hotel's military history begins at 3:45 PM, culminating with the firing of the cannon at approximately 4:00 PM.
During times of war, the Grand Hotel was very important to the military. The Grand Hotel was used as a hospital during the Civil War. During World War II the hotel was used by the U.S. Army Air Corps for marine training known as "Operation Ivory Soap."
Each afternoon the "Grandeur, Grit and Glory since 1847" presentation at the the cannon is designed to salute today’s military and those who have passed through this historic hotel over the years. The cannon is similar to the ones used across the country when the Grand Hotel first opened in 1847.Create Date
