Confederate Rest Cemetery historical sign - Point Clear Cemetery

Description

The interior portion of Point Clear Cemetery is designated "Confederate Rest." Located at the juncture of Pinegrove Drive and Confederate Rest Road, and adjacent to the Lakewood Golf Course, this peaceful site is the final resting place of up to 300 Confederate soldiers. Under a flag of truce, the wounded were transported to numerous locations, including Point Clear, Alabama. The Grand Hotel and the adjacent Gunnison House served as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers from the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (summer 1863) during the War Between the States. The records of those buried here were kept at the hotel, but were lost in a fire in 1869.
