Description

Dated May 1911. Beyond the prominently seated skeleton and carriage immersed in the lily pond (a/k/a Lake Winnetta) at College Park, in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, is a rare view of Wayne Street. The large house in the foreground was the home of Thomas Riley Huffman [1866-1949] and family, later owned by Henry Clay Sayers Jr. [1872-1945] and family. The Waynesburg University gymnasium is now located where these homes once stood. Credit for this unusual snapshot is likely due to the Waynesburg College students who were known for enjoying pranks at the pond. This original image is preserved in the personal scrapbook of Paul Waddell Knox [1891-1965], Class of 1913. Paul was also the editor of the first Waynesburg College yearbook, published in 1912, in which he shared this candid with the caption, "Speaks for itself." Handwritten inscription on scrapbook page reads, "Bones - May '11." Original, candid.
