Description

Dated 1919, Yolo County, California. Frank Leslie “Les” Morris Jr. [1907-2007], age 12, with Champion Tilly Alcartra [1908-1924]. Tilly Alcartra, owned by Asa W. Morris and Sons of Woodland, California, was the most famous Holstein cow of the early twentieth century. Tilly broke the world’s record for milk production in 1914 with over 30,000 pounds of milk in one year—a feat that had never been done by any breed. She held world’s records for milk and butter production for almost a decade and was crowned the “Queen of Holsteins.” Tilly was an international bovine celebrity. She traveled with Asa in First Class rail parlor cars and was an invited guest at the lavish Palace Hotel in San Francisco. She is pictured here with Asa’s oldest grandson, Frank Leslie “Les” Morris Jr. (1907-2007). Original, professional photograph from McCurry. Photo courtesy of Marilyn Morris Fields, Woodland, California (Les Morris was Marilyn’s father). Photo was used in the research for the children’s book Asa and the Holstein Queen, by Lynne Gough.
