Description

Carte-de-Visite photograph. Handwritten inscription on reverse of image reads, "Katherine Able / Linton / & / Henry Linton." This caption indicates that the subjects are Henry Linton [1809-1887] and Catherine (Abel) Linton [1810-1888]. However, in the Mary (Vance) McCann Collection, there are two images of couples identified as Henry Linton [1809-1887] and Catherine (Abel) Linton [1810-1888], and two more images of men identified as Henry Linton [1809-1887]; unfortunately, photograph analysis indicates that the pictures are not all of the same people, calling all of these identifications into question and requiring further research (see item # MILB-AN001-0002-0029, item # MILB-AN001-0006-0036, item # MILB-AN001-0006-0037, item # MILB-AN001-0006-0038). It seems likely that at least some of the Linton captions were well-meaningfully written in error by later generations that had not personally known the people pictured. This image also appears in the John Robert Rice Collection, see item # RICE-AN001-0002-0029. Siblings and in-laws of Gredelia (Rice) Vance [1834-1901] appear in both the John Robert Rice Collection and the Mary (Vance) McCann Collection. Original, professional photograph from F. W. Plummer, Photographer, Hornbrook's Block, 1138 Main Street, Wheeling, W. Va.

Notes

The Mary (Vance) McCann Collection was passed from George Birch Vance [1870-1928] and Jessie Dell (McFarland) Vance [1868-1935] with the ownership of their home in Mapletown, Monongahela Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, to their daughter, Mary (Vance) McCann [1898-1987], and her husband, Marshall Albert McCann [1895-1956]. Mary (Vance) McCann left the collection to her grandson, William Marshall Miller, who owned and shared the collection with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2023.
