Description

Dated 1832. Photograph of a painted portrait depicting Phoebe (Terrell) Edmonds [1813-1897] - wife of William Edmonds, daughter of Thomas Terrell. Phoebe was the mother of Caroline Amelia Edmonds, and grandmother of Charles Arthur Weaver, who married Mary Inghram Denny, of Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. The painting was done in London, England, in 1832. It passed into the possession of Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver after her husband's death. Other candid images in the Josephine Denny collection show the portrait hanging in the Denny home. A handwritten inscription on the reverse of the image reads, "Portrait of Phoebe Terrell Edmonds 1813-1897. Painted in London 1832. Maternal grandmother of Charles Arthur Weaver."

Notes

The Josephine Denny Collection was passed from Eleazer Luse Denny [1865-1910] and his wife, Louise (Inghram) Denny [1867-1956], to their daughters, Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver [1891-1972], Josephine Denny [1893-1992], and Helen (Denny) Howard [1896-1981]. Josephine Denny passed the collection to Farley Toothman who owned and shared it with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project between 2004 and 2025.
