Description

Carte-de-Visite photograph of John T. Kent - husband of Eliza Bell, son of David Kent & Elizabeth Barnes. Original, professional photograph from A. Wallace, Waynesburg, PA. No tax stamp, indicating that the photo dates prior to or after the Civil War era (1864-1866) when a tax stamp was used. Identification was accomplished by comparison with identified photographs and analysis of genealogical research. An incorrect identification appears on the back side of the photo as a handwritten note which says, "David Kent, mother Jacobs' dad." The first problem with David’s identification is that CDVs were not common in the USA until 1859; David Kent died 28 April 1855. Though older photos were often reproduced onto CDVs in later years, that does not appear to be the case here. This photo appears to date appropriately to the 1860s based on the fashions expressed, leaving no reason to believe that it is a reproduction. An additional problem is that David Kent was born in 1801; the man in this photo is very young. David would have been in his 40s at the earliest, by the time photography in any form was common enough for him to have had his picture taken.

Notes

The Jacobs-Kent Series probably began with Eleanor Ann (Kent) Jacobs [1832-1902], wife of Henry Moore Jacobs, and daughter of David Kent & Elizabeth Barnes. Eleanor's photographs were passed to her son Joseph Warren Jacobs [1868-1947] to his daughter Helen Mae (Jacobs) Fonner [1922-1999] to her daughter Anna (Fonner) Blystone who with her husband, George Blystone, owned and shared the photographs with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2005. Source Citation: John T. Kent, item no. JACB_AN001_0090, Helen Mae (Jacobs) Fonner Collection, shared by George and Anna (Fonner) Blystone, Greene Connections Archives Project (www.GreeneConnections.com).
