Captain John Morris was the third son of Ephraim Morris and Martha Roseberry of Center Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer, stock raiser, blacksmith, stone mason, and carpenter. Father of six children by first wife, Sarah Church: Martha Ann Morris (Call), Asa Warren Morris, Arta Mace Morris (Hunt), John Roseberry Morris, Reverend James Madison Morris, Elijah Ephraim Morris. Father of twins by second wife, Elizabeth Phillips: Joseph Garfield Morris and Sarah “Sadie” Morris (Seeley), born in Greene County, 1880.
John served from 1861-1862 as captain of Company F, 85th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia, and paralyzed after the Battle of Seven Pines, Virginia (discharged June 23, 1862).
About 1890, Captain John moved to Jewell County, Kansas with his second wife Elizabeth Phillips and their twins, Joseph Garfield Morris [1880-1959] and Sarah Ann “Sadie” (Morris) Seeley [1880-1962]. He returned to Greene County about 1901, after the death of his wife. His son Joseph remained in Jewell County; daughter Sadie married Edgar Seeley and moved to Fresno, California.
