Description

Tintype of Eliza McFarland [1870-1962] - daughter of Josephus McFarland and Mary Ann Linton. Identification based on comparison to item # MILB-AN002-0001 and item # MILB-AN002-0002. Note that tintypes are typically reversed, like looking into a mirror. However, this effect could be countered by fitting a mirror into the camera. It is possible that such an effect was used for this image. Both item # MILB-AN002-0001 and item # MILB-AN002-0002 are also tintypes, and in both Eliza's left eye (which is therefore her right eye in real life) appears misaligned. Conversely, in this tintype, the misalignment actually does appear pictured in her right eye. We believe that this tintype is the one righted by a camera effect, as opposed to the other two, because her brother John has a similar eye issue in item # MILB-AN002-0001, which is a tintype of the McFarland family taken in 1882. However, in later cabinet cards of John (see item # MILB-AN001-0001-0002 and item # MILB-AN001-0004-0005), John's right eye seems to have been edited by hand to appear centered. Cabinet cards are not mirrored. With these considerations, it appears that both John and Eliza had misaligned right eyes in life. Original, no photographer listed. The Mary (Vance) McCann Collection was passed from George Birch Vance [1870-1928] and Jessie Dell (McFarland) Vance [1868-1935] with the ownership of their home in Mapletown, Monongahela Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, to their daughter, Mary (Vance) McCann [1898-1987], and her husband, Marshall Albert McCann [1895-1956]. Mary (Vance) McCann left the collection to her grandson, William Marshall Miller, who owned and shared the collection with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2023.
