The author of this letter, Jane (Phelan) Drake [1877-1964], was the daughter of Joseph Walker Phelan and Hannah Denny. The letter was sent to her aunt, Mary Woodruff Denny [1858-1937], daughter of Meeker Woodruff Denny and Jane Luse. The business of Jane's father, Joseph Walker Phelan [1840-1902], is printed on the letterhead: "J. W. Phelan, / Dealer in / Groceries, Confections / Queensware, Glassware, Crockeryware, Etc. / ...Hook's Corner..."

The Josephine Denny Collection was passed from Eleazer Luse Denny [1865-1910] and his wife, Louise (Inghram) Denny [1867-1956], to their daughters, Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver [1891-1972], Josephine Denny [1893-1992], and Helen (Denny) Howard [1896-1981]. Josephine Denny passed the collection to Farley Toothman who owned and shared it with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project between 2004 and 2025.
