Description

Wallet and contents, preserved as last used by Edward McNicholas, Private First Class, Company K, 110th Infantry, 28th Division. Edward was wounded in action 26 September 1918. He died from his wounds 28 September 1918 Varennes, Picardie, France. His relative, Joseph McNicholas, who maintains the family collection, provides the following account of this heirloom: "This is my favorite item I have of Edwards. I have made a scan of his wallet and the items which were inside when he perished. After the Scan, I have placed the items back in the same location where they have been for 100 years. This is an artifact that belongs to Edward. Although there are 2 more calendar inserts for October and November behind the Sept Calendar, the Sept 1918 inset remains forever at the month he died. To me the 3 cent stamp represents optimism and a desire to communicate with home. There is a folded newspaper clipping of the Lord's Prayer. There is a picture of an unknown woman. This wallet brings Edward back to life for me."
