Carte-de-visite of John Rogers Phelan [1846-1870] - son of John Phelan and Jane Walker. John is wearing his United States Naval Academy uniform. He graduated in 1866.
John was lost at sea with the U.S.S. Oneida on 24 January 1870. See item # CAND-AN007-0023 to read T. A. Lyons, "The Loss of the Oneida," Scribner's Monthly, an Illustrated Magazine for the People (September 1880), Volume 20, Issue 5, pages 750-758.
Handwritten inscription on front of photograph reads, "John Phelan U.S.N."
There is a torn tax stamp on the back side indicating that the photo dates to the Civil War. Though the stamp is no longer intact, it probably dates between 1 August 1864 and 1 March 1865 during the time when a tax stamp higher than 1 cent was used.

The Phelan-Walker Album is preserved in original order. Personal inscriptions and image captions indicate that the album may have once belonged to Mary (Phelan) Hogue [1846-1934], Waynesburg College, Class of 1864. The album was likely passed to her daughter, Jane Phelan "Jany" Hogue [1881-1972], Waynesburg College, Classes of 1904 and 1905, who provided it to her family's alma mater for preservation.
Mary (Phelan) Hogue [1846-1934] was the daughter of John Phelan [1806-1874] and Jane (Walker) Phelan [1808-1876]. Mary's husband was Asa Brownfield Hogue [1841-1915], son of Solomon Hoge [1803-1877] and Rachel Huss [1811-1890]. Relatives of both families are represented in the album, as well as other individuals from their community and acquaintance. Notable among the images are Mary's brother John Phelan [1846-1870] and his shipmate Thomas Logan Tulloch [1845-1870], both of whom were lost at sea, off the coast of Yokohama, Japan, with the U.S.S. Oneida on 24 January 1870.
The album is archived at the Waynesburg University Paul R. Stewart Museum (Miller Hall, 51 W. College St.; Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370). Researched and digitized for the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project, 2023.
