Description

UPDATED IDENTITY 2020: Believed to be Elizabeth (Keener) Owens [1787-1876] - wife of Thomas Owens. Elizabeth was the mother of Thomas Owens [1806-1874] whose descendants shared this collection. A handwritten inscription on the back of the photograph indicates that this is a picture of Nancy (Wells) Owens - wife of Thomas Owens [1806-1874]. However, records indicate that Nancy died prior to 1850, while probably only in her 30s or 40s. If that is true, the woman pictured cannot be Nancy. This photograph is of an older woman and was probably taken in the 1860s or 1870s, after Nancy died. This inscription appears to simply be an error made by a later generation relative who knew the photo was of a female ancestor from the Owens family. Based on age of subject (elderly), date of original photograph (1860s-1870s), and genealogy comparisons for eligible subjects, we believe that Elizabeth (Keener) Owens [1787-1876] is a very likely candidate. Accordingly, the picture is actually of Thomas Owens's [1806-1874] mother as opposed to his wife. This cabinet card photograph is likely an 1890s-era reproduction by Photographic Art Studio, Caldwell's Building, Washington, Pa., of the original 1860s-1870s photograph. Based on the similar appearance of item # YEAT_AN002_0007, we believe both of these old photos were taken to the local photographer for reprints at the same time in the 1890s.
