Description

Unidentified couple. A modern handwritten inscription on the reverse of the image reads, "Samuel Thompson / Sarah Ellen Call," indicating that the subjects may be Samuel Thompson [1839-1925] and his first wife, Sarah Ellen (Call) Thompson [1840-1894]. However, this caption has been disproven. First of all, the unidentified couple are older than Samuel and Sarah would have been in the 1890s. Sarah died at age 54, in 1894. Secondly, a photograph in this same collection of the Thompson family in front of their home, taken shortly before Sarah's death, provides an obvious and contradicting comparison (see item # CGSP-AN015-0003) proving that Samuel and Sarah are not the unidentified couple. Other identified images of Samuel provide additional evidence for his appearance over the years (see item # CAND_AN003_0012, item # CAND_AN003_0013, and item # GCHS-AN026-0241B). The Illinois photographer stamp may be relevant to several of the Thompson lines among Samuel's siblings and children that moved to that state. Original, professional photograph from E. E. DeBolt, Washburn, Ill.

Notes

The Samuel Thompson Series was most likely passed from Samuel Thompson [1839-1925] and his wife, Sarah Ellen (Call) Thompson [1840-1894], to their daughter, Coral (Thompson) Huffman [1884-1943], to her daughter Ruth (Huffman) Clutter [1910-1985], to her daughter, Mary Lou (Clutter) (Mohr) James [1934-2021], to her son, Donald Mohr, who, in 2017, donated the series to the Cornerstone Genealogical Society (144 E. Greene St., PO Box 547; Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370). Researched and digitized for the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project, 2023.
