Description

Carte-de-visite believed to be Margaret (Fordyce) Stephens [1843-1863] - wife of Lindsey Stephens, daughter of Benson Fordyce and Maria Nichols. Handwritten inscription on back of photograph reads, "Margaret Stephens." Original, professional photograph from Haas & Craig, Waynesburg, Pa. The cartouche frame artwork around this image was popular during the Civil War era. If this image is in fact a portrait of Margaret (Fordyce) Stephens [1843-1863], the family may have had carte-de-visites printed after her death to circulate among friends and relations. Haas & Craig photographers may have had a negative on file from a previous sitting, which was possible for paper prints by this time, or they may have reproduced the CDV from another image such as a daguerreotype or ambrotype. Eleanor (Morris) Linskea Album, Photo 20.

Notes

The Eleanor (Morris) Linskea Album originally belonged to Eleanor (Morris) Linskea [1835-1889], wife of John B. Linskea, daughter of John Morris and Charlotte Nichols. The carte-de-visite size album is inscribed on the front cover with her name, "Elly A. Linskea." After Eleanor's death at Dixmont State Hospital in Kilbuck Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the album appears to have passed to her brother, Jonathan Morris Morris [1832-1915], whose descendants have maintained it as part of his family collection. The Elizabeth Jane (Davis) (Rex) Morris Collection was passed from Jonathan Morris Morris [1832-1915] and his wife, Charlotte (Rinehart) Morris [1834-1916], with the ownership of the Morris Bicentennial Farm in Fordyce, Greene Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, to their son, Jesse Hull Morris [1875-1947], and his wife, Elizabeth Jane (Davis) (Rex) Morris [1879-1980]. Elizabeth added her Davis family heritage to the collection, before passing it to her son, Jonathan Rex Morris [1919-2003], and his wife, Sarah Elaine (Hostetler) Morris [1924-2009], whose children, John Robert Morris and Kathleen (Morris) Miller, owned and shared the collection with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2023.
