Carte-de-Visite photograph.
Greene County, Pennsylvania, Civil War historian, Garrett Toothman, noted that the subject was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Union Army at the time this photograph was taken. The rectangle on his shoulder is called a shoulderboard, all commissioned officers of the Union Army wore them. A 2nd Lieutenant was the lowest ranking commissioned officer and was signified by a set of shoulder boards with an empty field. His low commissioned officer rank is also signified by the fact that he is wearing a single breasted frock coat; after men got above the rank of Captain they generally, but not necessarily, wore double breasted frock coats.
