High Street [looking west from Church Street] in front of the Greene County Courthouse, Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania.
The Greene County Courthouse and yard are central on the left side of the street, with the Downey House showing through the trees on the opposite corner. On the right side of the street are [Left-Right] the Messenger Building, the Ledwith Building, and the edge of the Allison Building.
A postcard version of this image is dated 1890, see item # RUSH-AN001-0013-0002; however, it may have been taken closer to 1893. Notice the sign on the Messenger Building that reads, "Democratic / Headquarters / Cleveland / Stevenson." President Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). Adlai Stevenson was his Vice-President during the second term.
A smaller sign on the pole reads "Public / Telephone." In 1893, Alexander Graham Bell's patents on the telephone technology expired, which led to a prevalent increase of independent telephone companies.
