Description

Real-photo postcard of High Street (looking southeast) in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. On the eastern edge of the pictured buildings, is the Downey House at the corner of High and Washington Streets. The event captured by this image is still being researched, but appears to be related to a fire in the building behind the crowd. The firemen were volunteers, but not yet members of the Waynesburg Volunteer Fire Company. That organization was not formed until 4 March 1926, as a result of the disastrous Downey House fire which occurred 23 December 1925 and cost the lives of five firemen.
