Description

Elizabeth (Pagden) (Harman) Anderson [1842-1918] - daughter of William Pagden and Mary Simmons, wife of 1) John Harman [1842-1875] and 2) George Anderson [1848-1879]. In the 1900 Census, Elizabeth appears as a widow, living in the home of Timothy Johns Wisecarver, on North West Street in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. The detailed handwritten inscription on the reverse of Elizabeth's photograph was penned by Anna Mary (Schneider) Anderson [1885-1976], who was the wife of Robert Alexander Anderson [1880-1933]. There are multiple connections between the Anderson and Harman families. Understandably, Anna confused some of those relationships in her caption. The verified family tree shows that Anna's husband, Robert Alexander Anderson [1880-1933], was the son of Daniel M. Anderson [1827-1909] and Jane (Harman) Anderson [1838-1913]. >>> Jane (Harman) Anderson [1838-1913] was the sister of John Harman [1842-1875], Elizabeth (Pagden) (Harman) Anderson's first husband. >>> Daniel M. Anderson [1827-1909] was the uncle of George Anderson [1848-1879], Elizabeth (Pagden) (Harman) Anderson's second husband. >>> Another intermarriage occurred when Elizabeth's daughter by her first marriage, Ellen Harman [1868-1953], married her first cousin, John Thomas Anderson [1863-1926], son of Daniel M. Anderson and Jane (Harman) Anderson. Despite Anna's confusion about the family tree, she clearly knew Elizabeth, and accurately referenced her association with the Wisecarver family. Her message to Josephine Denny, who was actively building collections at the Greene County Historical Society, indicates that this image of Elizabeth was supposed to accompany a dress that had belonged to her, which was being donated for display.
