2026.1.1Description
Colorized candid photograph of Corporal Samuel Howard Ewart, Headquarters Company, 316th Infantry, 79th Division, who was killed in action 4 November 1918, during World War I.
Samuel was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Citation for gallantry in action by the War Department on 12 March 1923 for the fighting near the Borne du Cornouiller, France (Hill 378), 2-4 November 1918. The details of his service are explained in a letter written 17 March 1923, by Adjutant General Benjamin Alvord to Samuel's father, Frank M. Ewart: "Assigned to duty with Battalion Commander as a mounted orderly in charge of the horses of the battalion staff, which duty did not require him to remain with advanced elements, he begged permission to voluntarily accompany his Battalion Commander into battle displaying marked courage and fidelity to duty while under intense machine gun and artillery fire. All of the battalion staff officers except one having been killed or wounded, Corporal Ewart was of immeasurable assistance carrying messages under intense enemy fire for several days always with utter disregard for his own safety, thus setting an example to every man of his battalion until killed by enemy fire November 4, 1918." Alvord goes on to say, "Under the foregoing citation your son, if living, would be entitled to wear the silver star decoration on the ribbon of the Victory Medal. The Quartermaster General of the Army has been directed to forward the silver star decoration to you." This letter has been preserved and shared by Kent Johnson, grandson of Samuel's sister, Sarah Rebecca (Ewart) Mundell, along with Samuel's photograph and a letter he wrote home on 16 July 1918.
