Description

Carte-de-Visite photograph believed to be of Eleanor (Ingersoll) Barnes - wife of William Barnes. This CDV had been identified as Elizabeth (Barnes) Kent - wife of David Kent, daughter of William Barnes & Eleanor Ingersoll. However, further analysis of her age at the time of this image and comparison to another photograph of her, have led to the determination that she is not likely the subject of this image. Family resemblance and age-appropriateness have prompted the theory that this may instead be a photograph of her mother Eleanor (Ingersoll) Barnes. Original, professional photograph from A. Wallace, Waynesburg, PA. There is a 3 cent tax stamp on the back side indicating that the photo dates to the Civil War, probably between 1 August 1864 and 1 March 1865 during the time when a tax stamp higher than 1 cent was used.

Notes

The Jacobs-Kent Series probably began with Eleanor Ann (Kent) Jacobs [1832-1902], wife of Henry Moore Jacobs, and daughter of David Kent & Elizabeth Barnes. Eleanor's photographs were passed to her son Joseph Warren Jacobs [1868-1947] to his daughter Helen Mae (Jacobs) Fonner [1922-1999] to her daughter Anna (Fonner) Blystone who with her husband, George Blystone, owned and shared the photographs with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2005.
