The remains of the Downey House on the southwest corner of High and Washington Streets in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, following fire, 23 December 1925.
Five young men lost their lives fighting the fire when a brick wall from the neighboring Grossman Building (west of the Downey House) fell upon them. The Fort Jackson Hotel, which was built to replace the Downey House, bears a plaque honoring their memory: Harvey Call Jr., William Andrew Finch, J. Thurman Long, Joseph Rifenburg, and Victor Hoy Silveus.

The William Francis Jacobs Collection photographs were passed from Joseph Warren Jacobs [1868-1947] and his wife, Mary Emma Dulaney [1878-1958], to their son William Francis Jacobs and his wife, Audrey Muriel Lamb, to their son David Kent Jacobs who owned and shared the photographs with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2006.
