Funeral program.
PHOTOGRAPH: The original photograph that was copied for display in this funeral program is also included in the Josephine Denny Collection, see item # DENN-AN004-0034. It dates to circa 1885-1890, and based on the poem's theme, probably depicts the decedent at a younger age than she was at the time of her passing.
POEM: "The Good Old Grandmother" appears on page 62, of the "Minister's Hand Book for Christenings, Weddings, and Funerals" compiled and arranged by M. J. Savage, published in Boston, 1880. The book is available to read online through the Library of Congress Digital Collections at https://www.loc.gov/item/unk82068850/.
HANDWRITTEN NOTATIONS: Notations on the reverse indicate that the funeral program was in the custody of Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver [1891-1972] during her residency in Chicago, after her marriage to Charles Arthur Weaver, in 1929. The notes imply that she may have ordered a copy of the original photograph (item # DENN-AN004-0034) at that time; although if this is the case, then the notation contains an error because it refers to a daguerreotype, which this image is not. Daguerreotypes were most popular in the 1840s-1850s. They were long out of use by the time this photograph was taken in the 1880s-1890s. Furthermore, daguerreotypes were preserved on metal, while this image is preserved on glass.Collection
