Scope and Content

Leroy Woods Cleavenger journal, 1857. Leroy Woods Cleavenger [1833-1859] was a son of Samuel Cleavenger and Martha Lindsey. This journal and a series of love letters, also found in the Margaret Leonice (Needham) Still Collection, confirm that Margaret was Leroy's love interest from at least 1857, the year of his journal, until his death in 1859. Margaret Leonice Needham, Laura Weethee, and Lydia Weethee were the first three women to receive male-equivalent bachelor's degrees from Waynesburg College, graduating 23 September 1857, as identified in: Annual Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Waynesburg College for the Academic Year Ending September 1857. A transcription was made from the original journal in 2003, by John F. Hartman and Betty V. Hartman of Parkville, Maryland. The Hartmans shared their transcript with Candice Buchanan for inclusion in the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project.

The Margaret Leonice (Needham) Still Collection was passed from Margaret Leonice (Needham) Still [1838-1912] to her daughter, Cricket (Still) Tubbs [1866-1955], to her daughter, Bonnie (Tubbs) Watts [1906-1985], to her daughter, Bonnie (Watts) Cook, who owned and, with researchers John and Betty Hartman, shared the collection with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Archives Project in 2006.
