Description

Carte-de-visite photograph of Hannah Hester “Hettie” (Jones) Billingsley [1854-1940] - wife of Sias Billingsley, daughter of Lewis Jones and Ethalinda Havely. Hettie was a graduate of Dana's Musical Institute in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio (Class of 1873). Her schoolmate, Margaret Virginia (Thompson) Pauley [1855-1937] (Class of 1875), assembled the album in which this photograph appears. Hettie and Margaret were also both natives of Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. They were among several Greene Countians who attended the Ohio school, possibly due to the fact that Professor and Band Leader Charles R. Bradley [1843-1885] also came from Waynesburg. Margaret boarded with the Bradley family while receiving her education, and it is possible that Hettie stayed in the Bradley house as well. (Source: Catalogue of Dana's Musical Institute (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: William P. Kildare, 1875); Library of Congress Music Division.) Handwritten inscription on album page reads, "Hettie Jones (Billingsley)." Original, professional photograph from Rogers Brothers, Photographers, Opposite Public Square, Waynesburg, Pa.
