Morris Street, looking south from High Street (circa 1895-1900)Entry/Object ID
2008.5.509Description
Circa 1895-1900. Stereograph of Morris Street, looking south from High Street towards Cherry Alley, in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania.
About halfway down the block on the right side of the street is a sign that reads, "Oskar Flick / Horse Shoeing." Oscar B. Flick [1854-1927] was the son of William Flick and Maria (Rinehart) (Flick) Hartzell.
The pair of images on the stereograph predate the paving of Morris Street, in 1901; and the construction of the Ross Building, in 1904.
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, for the years 1886, 1891, 1896 and 1901, all show consistent building footprints on this block of Morris Street, from High Street south to Cherry Alley. By the next map in 1908, Morris Street, like much of the town, had undergone substantial changes. The maps have been digitized by the Library of Congress (see WEB LINKS below).
This view of Morris Street was No. 19 in a series of 30 stereographs picturing Waynesburg scenes that were distributed by local photographer J. H. Rogers & Son. The list of all locations featured in the set was printed on the reverse of the image.
