Arms Manufactury in Greenville CountyEntry/Object ID
RG134-04-04Description
Greenville County’s early arms manufacturing history began with Adam Carruth, who established an ironworks and later an armory in 1816. He contracted with South Carolina and the U.S. War Department but delivered only 2,250 of 10,000 promised muskets due to financial, logistical, and bureaucratic challenges. During the Civil War, the State Military Works in Greenville produced weapons, notably the Morse breech-loading carbine. Despite operational issues and high costs, the Works contributed to South Carolina’s war effort. Local craftsmen like Thomas Peden and David Boyd also made quality rifles, marking Greenville as a significant center for Southern arms production.Collection
