RG134-05-02Description
Benjamin F. Perry was a prominent Greenville lawyer, journalist, and politician who emerged as South Carolina’s leading Unionist during the 19th century. Though unpopular for opposing secession, he championed the preservation of the Union and democratic reform, often at personal and political cost. As editor of the Greenville Mountaineer, Perry fiercely resisted nullification and later secession, engaging in bitter public disputes—including a fatal duel. Despite setbacks, he remained influential, serving in the state legislature and briefly as South Carolina’s Provisional Governor after the Civil War. Perry’s legacy is one of principle, resilience, and enduring commitment to unity and reform.Collection
