Description

The Greenville Municipal Airport, later known as the Downtown Airport, was dedicated on November 11, 1928, through the efforts of American Legion Post Commander George D. Barr and other community leaders. Motivated by Greenville’s earlier failure to secure a federal airmail stop, local entities collaborated to fund the project. The city, county, Park and Tree Commission, and proceeds from a Legion-sponsored air show financed the airport. Land was purchased east of the city, and construction soon followed. A large air show marked its opening. The airport became a vital part of Greenville’s transportation network and aviation history.
