Description

John Broadus Watson, born near Travelers Rest, South Carolina, was a pioneering psychologist who founded Behaviorism, a movement that rejected introspection in favor of observable behavior. A Furman University graduate, Watson rose to prominence at Johns Hopkins University. His 1925 book Behaviorism revolutionized psychology and influenced figures like B.F. Skinner. Controversy, including a scandalous divorce, forced Watson out of academia and into a successful advertising career. Despite his radical theories and personal challenges, Watson left a lasting legacy in psychology, especially in behavior modification. Once forgotten in Greenville, he is now recognized as one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century.
