Following the Revolutionary War, education slowly developed in South Carolina, with the upcountry lagging behind the coast. In Greenville, the community established the Male and Female Academies in 1820 through private subscriptions and land donated by Vardry McBee. The schools operated under a trustee board and were supported by tuition, donations, and occasional escheated property. Despite internal conflicts and funding challenges, the academies educated many notable figures. By 1854, the rise of Furman University and a proposed Baptist Female College led to their closure. Private and denominational schools continued until Greenville launched its public school system in 1886.Collection
