Description

The Greenville Public Library began in 1921 through civic leadership and private funding, notably from Thomas F. Parker. It evolved from earlier efforts like the Neblett Free Library (1877) and expanded rapidly with community support, outreach services, and traveling bookmobiles. The library was inclusive from its inception, serving all races and rural areas. Despite financial challenges during the Depression and WWII, it grew in services and facilities, including a permanent home in 1940 and a new modern building in 1970. By its 50th anniversary in 1971, it was a model public library, fulfilling Parker’s vision of educational impact and accessibility.
