Description

In the 1930s, Furman University President Bennette Eugene Geer led a bold collaboration between Furman, the Woman’s College, and Greenville community institutions to form the Greenville County Council for Community Development. Funded by an $80,000 General Education Board grant, the initiative used the county as a laboratory for addressing social problems through education, public health, recreation, and interracial cooperation. It resulted in curriculum reform, graduate education, faculty research, and national attention. Despite internal controversy and Geer’s eventual resignation, the program marked a high point in community-engaged education and left a lasting legacy in Furman-Greenville relations.
