History of the Greenville Water SystemEntry/Object ID
RG134-07-01Description
John L. Hawkins chronicles the development of the Greenville Water System from its inception in 1887 through 1981. Initially reliant on springs and a small local pipeline, Greenville’s water needs grew with its population and infrastructure. The Paris Mountain Water Company launched the first major system in 1888, followed by the city’s purchase in 1918. Major expansions included reservoirs, standpipes, and treatment plants, with sources eventually reaching Table Rock and North Saluda. The Keowee Project began in the 1970s to meet future demand. Throughout its history, the system was self-sustaining, debt-financed, and politically independent, serving a growing regional population.Collection
