Description

From 1951 to 1963, the U.S.O. in Greenville, SC provided vital support to military personnel stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base. Community leaders, led by H.F.A. Lange and supported by local organizations, launched two U.S.O. Clubs funded initially by local contributions. These clubs offered recreational programs, housing assistance, counseling, and social events, with extensive involvement from volunteers and Junior Hostesses. Over 93,000 services were rendered, supported by churches, civic groups, and businesses. The clubs were nationally recognized for their excellence. Although they closed in 1963, Greenville’s U.S.O. Committee continued coordinating funding and representing local interests with the National U.S.O. organization.
