A Brief Highlight History of the Greenville Hospital SystemEntry/Object ID
RG134-08-14Description
The Greenville Hospital System began in the late 1800s amid growing health concerns and a lack of medical facilities in Greenville. Persistent efforts by local women, especially the Women’s Hospital Board, led to the 1912 opening of the City Hospital with 84 beds. Over the decades, the system expanded significantly—adding new buildings, establishing nursing programs, and adapting to changing medical needs. By the 1970s and '80s, it had evolved into a regional medical center with over 1,200 beds and state-of-the-art technology. Largely self-sustaining, the system became a major healthcare provider and economic force in the Upstate region.Collection
