Description

Robert Maxwell, a Revolutionary War militia captain, was among Greenville County’s earliest settlers, receiving land in 1784. He established “The Grove” plantation and became a civic leader, serving as legislator and sheriff of the vast Washington District. He was assassinated in 1797, likely due to political enmity. His descendants through two of his four children became prominent in Greenville’s history, contributing leaders in medicine, business, politics, and civic life. Families like the Beatties, Clevelands, Poes, and Williamses trace their roots to him. Although no Greenville Maxwells remain by name, their legacy is embedded in the city’s development.
